•  Professional Experience and Associations:


After he earning his M.A. degree in economics at Harvard University in 1947, Tan Chongtai went to Washington, D.C., working as a technical assistant in the Far Eastern Commission and researching on Japanese economy and post war reparation. In early 1948, he returned to Wuhan University, and assumed as an associate professor in economics. He was then the youngest associate professor at Wuhan University. From 1948 to 1957, he had taken many important administrative positions, such as Deputy Dean of the Department of Economics , Vice Secretary-General of the University Administration , Vice-Chairman of the University Administration , Director of the Presidential Office of Wuhan University , etc.

Since 1978, Prof. Tan Chongtai has assumed, one after another, such important posts as Dean of the School of Economics and Management ; Lifelong Honored Dean of Economics School ; Chairman of the Academic Committee of Economics School ; Vice Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Wuhan University ; Vice Editor-in-Chief of Wuhan University Press ; Consultant of the Academic Committee of Wuhan University ; Vice Chairman of the International Academic Exchange Committee of Wuhan University .

Professor Tan Chongtai is also a nation-wide prominent personage and has been conferred honored positions in the different professional associations, such as Vice Chairman of Chinese Association of Foreign Economic Doctrines ; Honored Chairman of Chinese Association of Foreign Economic Doctrines ; Member of the Council of the Chinese Association of Population Economics and concurrently Vice Chairman of the Council of the Hubei Sub-Association of the Chinese Population Economics ; President of the Hubei Association of Modern Science of Leadership and so on.

Professor Tan Chongtai himself has taken an active part in the international academic exchanges and has made a significant contribution to facilitating the flow of education and research of economics between China and the outside world. From 1980 to 1981, Tan visited U.S.A to do his research and give his lectures in University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University and University of Nevada. In 1989 he was sponsored by the Ford Foundation and returned to Harvard University for his academic activities. As a Chinese-side member of China Economics Education Exchange Committee with United State (CEEEUS), he went to the United States frequently to take part in the routine conferences by CEEEUS . In addition to all this, Professor Tan has been awarded as “ Honorary Professor ” and “ Guest Professor ” in lots of Chinese universities, such as University of International Trade and Economics, SUN YAT-SEN University, Hua Zhong University of Science & Technology, South West University of Finance and Economics, Guangxi Normal University, Qindao University , etc.. He is now concurrently a specially-invited research fellow of the Hubei Academy of Social Science Researches.


3. Fields of Interest and Main Academic Contributions:

Professor Tan's main fields of interest are as follows: Development Economics; Microeconomics; Macroeconomics; History of Western Thoughts on Economic Development; Economic Growth and Agricultural Development in China; An Analysis into the Economic Development of the Developed Countries at their Early Stage in Comparison with Economic Development of the Developing Countries Nowadays, etc. Up to now, Professor Tan Chongtai has published, co-authored, translated and chief-edited 16 books and textbooks and put out more than 50 articles in academic journals.

Professor Tan Chongtai was the first scholar who systemically introduced development economics into China. In 1985, he published Development Economics , the first monograph which described and evaluated the modern theories of development economics in China. This book received a great echo in China's academic circle and was issued for as many as ten thousand volumes. In 1989, the textbook Development Economics edited by him came off the press and was spoken highly of by the economic professionals at home and abroad. As early as in the year of 1984, he advanced, in order not to lose a complete view of the history, to grip a main line of the thoughts on economic development so as to re-explain the western history of economic thoughts. His exploration has changed the traditional approach at home to research on the western history of economic thoughts. Under his leadership and his guidance, and after the perennial studies with great concentration, the book History of Western Thoughts on Economic Development was finished and published. This book won splendid acclamation from the fellow economists and was awarded, one after another, many top academic prizes in China's circles of humanities and social sciences. In late 1990s, Tan organized the writing of Advances in Development Economics , which came out in 1999.In this book, Professor Tan thoroughly analyzed and evaluated the different kinds of theories of development economics at the third period of its evolution which began since the early 1980s. Tan generalized the third period of advance of this discipline as the period of Neoclassical Political Economics. Because of his long-standing and prominent contributions to our country, Professor Tan Chongtai has been conferred the Governmental Special Allowance by the State Council since 1991.


4. Grants and Prizes:


•  The book History of Western Thoughts on Economic Development was honored the following prizes: the First-Rate Prize for the Excellent Research Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences in National Institutions of Higher Education (1995); the First-Rate Prize for the Excellent Research Achievements in the Publishing Houses of the National Institutions of Higher Education (1996); the First-Rate Prize for the Outstanding Research Achievements in the Social Sciences of Wuhan University (1996); the Third National Prize for the Excellent Academic Books (1997); the Second-Rate Prize for the Outstanding Achievements of the National Social Sciences Foundation Research Projects (1999).

•  The book Advances in Development Economics (1999) won such prizes as follows: the Second-Rate Prize for the Excellent Research Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences in the National Institutions of Higher Education (2003) ; the Prize of Hubei Excellent Academic Books (2001); the Prize of China Excellent Academic Books (2002) ; the First-Rate Prize for the Outstanding Research Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences of Wuhan University (2002).

•  The book Development Economics (1985) was honored the Prize for the Research Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences in National Institutions of Higher Education and the Second-rate Prize for the Research Achievements of Hubei Province.

•  The textbook Development Economics (1989) won the First-Rate Prize for the Excellent Research Achievements of Hubei Province (1991) . It was awarded the Prize of National Excellent Textbooks by the Ministry of Education (1992) and has been successively chosen as a nation-wide textbook for graduate level by the Ministry of Education (2002).

•  The textbook Modern Doctrine of Western Economics (1983) was honored the Second-Rate Prize of the Excellent Textbooks by the Ministry of Education (1988) .

•  The essay Ten Years of Research and Application of the Theory of Development Economics in China won the First-rate Prize for the Excellent Research Achievements in Social Sciences of Wuhan University (1997 ).

•  Since 1991, Professor Tan Chongtai has been conferred the Governmental Special Allowance by the State Council.


5. Research Programs in Recent Years:


To this day, there are more than 10 national key research projects which were taken in charge by Professor Tan Chongtai or were finished by him and his associates. Here are some representative research programs which were carried out in his charge since 1996.

1. A Study on Recent Advances in Development Economics (1996-1999). It was a Key Program of Researches of the National Social Sciences Foundation

2. A Research of Comparison of the Historical Experiences of Developed Countries in the Initial Period of Development with the Roads of Development in the Developing Countries Nowadays (in progress). It is also a Key Program of Researches of the National Social Sciences Foundation .

3. A Research of Comparison between the Economic Development of the Developed Countries at their initial stages and that of the Current Developing Countries (in progress).This is a Key Program of Research in the 100 Centers for Humanities and Social Sciences Researches of the Ministry of Education .


6. Instructions (Courses Taught):


Professor Tan Chongtai has kept teaching for more than 50 years and has taught more than one hundred thousands of students at different levels. He is among the few professors who have the longest length of teaching in Wuhan University. Since 1948, Tan has taught several tens of courses to the students at three levels: For the students at the undergraduate level, he taught Political Economy , Fundamental Statistics, International Trade , Business Cycles , Development Economics , etc.; For the students in the M.A. programs, Tan gave lectures on the History of Western Thoughts on Economic Development , Microeconomics , Macroeconomics, and Development Economics , etc.; For those candidates for the Ph.D. degrees, he talked on the Topics on the Frontiers of Development Economics , and Readings in Classical Works of Economics , etc..
