Call for papers for International Academic Conference "A Comparison of Industrial Structure and Economic Policy in China and Russia"

The Wuhan University (PRC) and National Research University - Higher School of Economics (Russia) announce the call for papers for international academic conference "A Comparison of Industrial Structure and Economic Policy in China and Russia" to be held at the Wuhan University in late September 2011.


The main goal of the conference is to share research findings related to those two countries’ industrial and institutional development and corresponding policy designs at the national and regional levels. The researchers from China, Russia and other countries are invited. The preference will be given to the papers focused on benchmarking different models applied in transition reforms and on empirical assessment of structural changes, drivers of technological upgrade and ways to enhance international competitiveness, particularly in manufacturing industry.


The main topics of the Conference are:

a) late industrialization and structural changes

b) technological upgrade, innovation and competitiveness

c) FDI, trade openness and enhancement of international competitiveness

d) sectoral specificity: the leading sectors (car-making, construction and real estate particularly) in the process of economic development

e) state-owned enterprises: reform and influence on market structure and efficiency

f) competition and antimonopoly policy

g) private/family firms and their perspectives


The working language of the Conference is English.


Invited keynote speakers are Prof. Guo Xibao (Wuhan University) and Prof. Vladimir Popov (New Economic School in Msocow and Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada).

Prof. Vladimir Popov is a senior research fellow of the Russian Academy of Sciences and concurrently a professor of economics at Carlton University, Ottawa, Canada, more information can be found at:

Deadline for submission of extended abstracts: 30 March 2011

Acceptance of submitted abstracts: 15 May 2011

Submission of final papers: 30 June 2011


The application should include the following information:

? the title of the proposed paper,

? an abstract accounting for 300-500 words,

? personal contact details (full name, job title, institutional affiliation, current position, postal address, contact phone, fax, and e-mail address).


Abstracts should be in RTF, Microsoft Word or PDF formats, should include three to five key words and JEL classification numbers, and indicate to which theme among above listed topics it is submitted.


There is no registration fee. Participants themselves will cover their own round-trip travel expenses and accommodation (excluding key note speakers). The preliminary time schedule for the conference is as follows:

Sept. 21st, participants arrive at Wuhan, check in the hotel (to be decided)

Sept. 22-23rd, a roundtable conference will be held for two days

Sept. 24th, a tour around the City of Wuhan

Sept. 25th, participants leave .
